Square Up

Squareup

Today City Club used "Square" to accept payments at our lunch. I wanted to post this because I was so happy with the service and I could see benefits to almost every non-profit or business in Tacoma.

It was a free account for the iPhone, iPad, or Android. Easy to set up and easy to confirm the system. A week after I signed up, I got the white square card reader in the mail.

Today we gave it a test-drive at City Club. Our lunch with Norm Dicks drew a lot of guests who paid at the door. We don't have a portable credit card reader, so by swiping cards at the event, we could take people's payments on the spot and not have to run them when we got back to the office. We also had the option to directly email (or text) a receipt from the app, again saving us a lot of time.

Because we used the iPad app, we had stored "items" we could bill, so we didn't even have to take much time keying in totals.

And within a day or two, the payment will be deposited into our account. The rates are also highly competitive with traditional merchant card fees.

The biggest critique I have is that the reader is a little sensitive. I still haven't mastered that fully yet so we hand-keyed in most cards.

Square was built for artists and people who are selling their wares on the spot, but it's innovative and helpful enough that many many people and organizations will find it helpful.
