The Happy Movie Trilogy - Erik Hanberg

The Happy Movie Trilogy

Groundhogday

This weekend Mary and I watched Groundhog Day. Both AO Scott and Roger Ebert had plugged it on Groundhog Day as a great movie and it reminded us that we wanted to see it again.

For me, it's part of what I think of as the Happy Movie Trilogy. Three movies, all dating back to about the same era–late 80s, early 90s, when I was just really starting to get into movies. They are all uplifting in their own individual way. I bet I watch each every 3 or 4 years. The movies are:

  • Groundhog Day–with a message somewhere between "Be Generous" and "Improve Yourself For A Better Life"
  • Field of Dreams–with a message somewhere between "Be Bold" and "Have Faith"
  • City Slickers–with a message somewhere between "Be Adventurous" and "Take Life By The Horns"
There are some subsets to the trilogy which I enjoy watching regularly, all from the same era. But these are the ones I go back to. I recommend them for all your aches and pains.
