Three movies - Erik Hanberg

Three movies

It's Complicated
Meryl Streep is always fun to watch, and both Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin are good too. This movie is light-years better than The Holiday was. But Nancy Meyers is a very uneven writer. Some of the scenes just sing, and others feel pointless. Some characters even feel pointless. Still, when it's on, it's pretty good.

Young Victoria
I was disappointed by this movie. It did make me want to read a biography of Victoria, but the movie itself didn't strike me much. Mary called it "pleasant" and I would add the word "enough" to it. "Pleasant enough." Nothing great, nothing special.

Jennifer's Body
This was a surprisingly adept film. After watching it, I read Ebert's review which ended with "this movie is better than a movie about a flesh-eating cheerleader had to be." And that's about right. I dislike Megan Fox's persona in real life, but she's done a pretty good job picking roles (not counting Transformers). Her role in How to Lose Friends and Alienate People was pretty well done, and she played this role well too. I rather liked it. Just like Juno, Diablo Cody's dialog strains a bit at times. But it's often  witty and clever.
