A post on the iPad

Some quick things I've noticed …

1) I've definitely noticed how it's replaced the laptop for a huge number of tasks. I work on the laptop, but it's nice to say, "Ok, I'm done with work now," and then pick up the iPad for the fun stuff–ie, Twitter, Facebook, and Google Reader.

One of the other reasons I've migrated to the iPad for a lot of tasks is that it's nice not to have a very hot machine on my lap. My lap can't take the laptop for too long before it gets too hot. I'd taken to leaving narrow hardcover books around the house to put the laptop on. The iPad doesn't kick out an ounce of heat, and that makes it much more comfortable on the couch.

2) The web browsing experience can't be beat. The no flash thing can be an issue on some sites, but generally, it's a great browsing experience. Tapping on links just feels right.

3) The iPad falls down in bright sunlight and it's still hard to adjust to. I can't take it out onto the deck or sometimes even near a big window without getting bad glare. This is a place where the Kindle is still superior, and they were smart to make it a highlight of their ads.

I've read books on the iPad and on the Kindle (and on my iPhone for that matter) and between the three, the Kindle's still the best. No backlight, no sun glare, lighter than the iPad by far (which makes it much better for reading in bed) and bigger than the iPhone screen.

It's a great computer. The battery life is incredible. I've found I can type quite well on it, though I haven't tried to do much more than send some long emails. But it's been a great little machine.
