Square Up
Today City Club used "Square" to accept payments at our lunch. I wanted to post this because I was so happy with the service and I could see benefits to almost every non-profit or business in Tacoma. It was a free account for the iPhone, iPad, or Android. Easy to set up and easy to confirm the system. A week after I signed up, I got the white square card reader in the mail. Today we gave it a test-drive at City Club. Our lunch with Norm Dicks drew a lot of guests who paid at the door. We don't have Read more…
Planning ahead at the zoo …
A series of public meetings this month will help guide the future of the Northwest’s only combined zoo and aquarium. Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium officials have set three sessions where community members can discuss the features and animals they’d like to see in the facility’s future. The input will help guide the zoo’s 10 year strategic plan over the next decade. The meetings are: • Wednesday from 6-7:30 p.m. at the zoo in Point Defiance Park. • Thursday from 6-7:30 p.m. at Tacoma Nature Center, 1919 South Tyler St., Tacoma • Monday from 4:30-6 p.m. at Metro Parks Headquarters Read more…
Some movies …
This past weekend Mary and I saw Arthur and The Conspirator. Arthur was meh. Some charm and good jokes every so often, but too long of stretches in between. The Conspirator was ok, but also, a litle slow. It’s the story of a trial of a conspirator of John Wilkes Booth. James McAvoy was really strong in the lead but the movie just never quite worked for me. Put another way, the story looked more interesting than the movie itself was. Still, even with two so-so movies, it was nice to spend in a little time in a movie theater Read more…
Tonight Mayor Strickland is leading a book discussion on “The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind”
We'll be at Kings Books at 7:00. Lots of themes to talk about, but one important one will be "why this book this year?" I hope you'll join us for a great discussion! Book discussions are always one of the best parts of the Tacoma Reads experience.
Parks Appreciation Day is Saturday!
Saturday is a county-wide Parks Appreciation Day here in Pierce County. Last year more than 2,000 volunteers helped clear trails, comb beaches, and trim limbs. It's going to be a fun morning. Weather is currently calling for showers in the evening, so hopefully that will hold out for us. Here's more information about it if you're interested!
Union Station at City Club, with Rep. Norm Dicks!
Next Wednesday the 20th, City Club's lunch will feature Congressman Norm Dicks, Judge Robert Bryan, and Jim Merritt to discuss the saving of Union Station. This is just in time for the 100th anniversary of the station. I have a real fondness for Union Station after Mary and I held our wedding reception there in 2008. And Mary used to be a tour guide there too, way back when. I hope you'll consider coming. It's definitely a great success story for Tacoma. More information at the City Club site.
