Has anyone actually found LinkedIn to be useful?

I’m in a bit of a social media purging mode right now. I’m always willing to try out a new opportunity, and I’ve been quick to try a lot of the sites–Twitter, Facebook, etc.

But every so often, I decide that my life needs a little more simplification, and I decide to cut back a bit. Last year I deleted my MySpace account and have not a single regret. I’m considering deleting my LinkedIn profile. For the life of me, I cannot figure out a good reason to stay on LinkedIn. It wasn’t particularly helpful looking for a job … I just don’t see the point.

Anyone want to try to talk me out of deleting this? How do you use it?

UPDATE: A bunch of people chimed in on Google Buzz. Looks like LinkedIn has some fans. I’ll keep it active for awhile.

  1. I guess maybe it has something to do with the field in question and what sort of job contacts you’re trying to make. I’m constantly getting contacts from recruiters, etc., for various software jobs, but I’m not trying to make contacts for an existing business or pick up consulting jobs, etc. So I guess it’s a YMMV sort of thing.

  2. I’ve ben a member of LinkedIn for quite awhile now and have not found it very useful.

I, too, have been on a purging kick lately. I, like you, dropped Myspace over a year ago (and have not looked back since). I’m primarily on Facebook and Twitter, with Buzz aggregating everything, though I don’t actively use the service.

Latitude is nice, but not very useful on a Blackberry. FourSquare is interesting, and I haven’t tried Gowalla. I was once a pretty heavy user of Loopt, but had no connections there, so I was pretty much updating for myself.
