Last summer I discovered that KMCQ at 104.5 is a fairly good station for Oldies. Their playlist is a little narrower than KBSG used to be, but it's the only station in the area where you can hear some of the pop songs from the 50s and 60s.
But the station seems like it's just run out of some guy's house or something.
A few times I'll find dead air when I flip past it, sometimes for 12 hours or more on end. One day last week every time I checked in their songs were skipping.
They don't even have their own email address. Requests can be sent in to an email that ends with @live.com.
And finally, I don't think they have ads. This is obviously the weirdest one–how many radio stations can get by without ads? But on two extended drives to Bremerton and back this past week it became clear: no ads.
I think the guy is a canned voice too. It's obviously becoming more common in the radio world to have that, but usually when you're trying to keep your costs low–you play ads!
Weird.
But still. When you want to hear Paul Revere and the Raiders (for example) it's about the only place for them.
Just stumbled across them early last month. You’re right – not a commercial in sight. I just wrote it off to a technique I have seen before, to build listenership with pre-recorded songs, then phase in commercials later. But I have never seen a commercial-free launch that lasted a month!
What I’m appreciating about KMCQ is the breadth of its playlist. I have listened for hours (it’s now my default driving station), and it took nearly 3 weeks for me to hear a song twice.
Now, if I could only get them to throw in a late-50s song once in a while…
