Side x Side Creative
Mary and I are very excited that we have transitioned “Mary Holste Design” to a new name and a new style with a lot more offerings. In the past, Mary Holste Design was mostly Mary, with me helping out on a per-project basis. Usually coding a website or writing an article. But I’m happy to say that since going full-time with the company three months ago, we’ve gotten a lot of jobs that have allowed us to work, well, side by side. Hence the name change. We’ve started new projects, like social media strategy for businesses, nonprofits, and authors. And Read more…
Starting a new chapter
Fatherhood has a way of making things very clear, and these past couple of months with a new family have helped me realize it's time for me to start a new chapter. After a lot of thought and discernment, I've decided that it's time to move on from my job at City Club. Earlier this month, I gave notice to the board and let them know that I could stay on through August 31 to help the transition process. I've learned a lot in the past three years, met some great new people, and I'm happy to say that when Read more…
Here’s the cover for my next novel, The Marinara Murders, coming November 15
There's a lot of things going on right now, but I am too excited about this to keep it quiet for much longer. So, without further ado, here is the cover for my novel, The Marinara Murders, which comes out next week–November 15. Mary designed this fabulous cover. The best part … she let me splatter the sauce. 🙂
It’s Friday I’m in Love!
You see, it was all building to that headline. 🙂 Anyway. It's been an interesting week. Quite good, really, despite a lot of different things pulling on me this week. One especially cool thing to report: I'm writing a long article for the Carleton Voice, the alumni magazine about my alma mater. If you want a good example of the truism "it takes 3 years for a business to make money," this is a perfect example. I pitched the magazine a story idea on March 30, 2008 (gmail saves everything, which is how I know). The idea was filed away Read more…

We turned our bathroom into a darkroom for a day of screenprinting. Photos of our adventures here …
A few months ago, Mary came up with a very cool idea for a screenprinting project. Since then, she's been assembling everything she needs to make it work. We finally got all the pieces arranged and spent a lot of our Sunday working on this. (Turns out, screenprinting is quite involved!) Here's a rough photo journey of the day. With the Speedball screenprinting kit, we taped the edges and prepared for work. The green sheen is a "photo-emulsion" chemical. Essentially it's like a photo developer chemical. The darkroom assembled (we replaced the heat lamp with a red bulb) the photo Read more…
