New Mary Holste Design website is up!
Mary's business has technically had a website these last couple years, but it's basically been a contact form, with little else going for it. After some solid work this past month, I'm happy to say that we finally have an actual website going. Check it out at MaryHolsteDesign.com. Also there are two screens below. Sometimes, the website you design may be your own. 🙂
Last night’s R-71 debate
I was very happy with last night's R-71 debate. We had a good discussion and good attendance (I think we had maybe 70 in the room, ranging from a state senator to a whole flock of college students). City Club has long hosted candidate forums and issue debates. But this was one different for a couple reasons: it was scheduled outside our regular programming and it was free. We had two presenters: Laurie Jenkins, a co-chair of the Approve 71 campaign, and Joseph Backholm, Executive Director of the Family Policy Institute of Washington. I asked five or six questions to Read more…
Side projects on stage!
5 local techies showed off their "work that wasn't for work" last night at SiteCrafting. I felt like it was a good round-up of interesting projects–from Twitter apps to algorithms used for mapping DNA to URL shorteners, there was a lot of everything. Represented were several SiteCrafting people–SiteCrafting was also a wonderful host for the event!–plus a couple from Topia, the two most recognizable tech companies in Tacoma at this point. Also some entrepreneurs, techies and communications folks from some big employers in town, and even someone from Tacoma Economic Development who dropped by to see what kinds of things Read more…
Tacoma Council bans smoking in public parks
Come next month, smokers beware: If you light up in a public park in Tacoma, you’ll be breaking the law. By a 6-3 vote, the Tacoma City Council approved late Tuesday an ordinance that makes smoking in any public park in the city illegal. via thenewstribune.com I don’t smoke. But this makes me want to go to Wright Park and light one up. I never liked the idea of a restaurant smoking ban, but I couldn’t argue with the logic about the restaurant workers who had to breath in many many times the smoke than a bar patron did, and Read more…
Tomorrow is “Side Project Demo Night” at Sitecrafting HQ!
Six to eight local techies will present on their side projects–"work that isn't work" at SiteCrafting. We'll have some pizza and such (hopefully you can chip in a couple bucks if you come!) and interesting presentations about Twitter apps, URL shorteners, and crowd-sourcing sites. If those things interest you, this is the event for you! Here's the details on FeedTacoma's Events Calendar. We'll start gathering at 5:30, with demos starting at 6.

City Club is hosting a debate on R-71 next Monday (10/26)–5:30 at UPS Rausch Auditorium. I’ll be moderating!
After several requests to host a debate on the domestic partnerships referendum, we've added it to the calendar. From our website: Come hear both sides discuss this important issue affecting the South Sound community. This event is free and all are welcome. Details: Monday, October 26th, 5:30pm, University of Puget Sound, Rausch Auditorium, inside McIntyre Hall. One of the things I most appreciate about City Club is the commitment to discussion and debate. As many long-time readers probably know, or at least as I hope you know, I am deeply committed to the process of civic discussion about issues. I Read more…
