We’re going to “Beat the Heat” at the @hotel_murano tonight.

The tweet from the Murano offered rooms for $101, since that’s the expected high today. That’s when the light went on. “Holy cow! We got a gift certifcate for the Murano for our wedding. What a great time to use it!”  Turns out, our outdoor bedroom wasn’t a super success. It was still pretty hot, and an aerobed isn’t super comfortable in the heat. How To Move Your Bedroom Outside

If you’ve got no AC (like us) and your house is hard to cool down (like us), let me recommend moving your bedroom outside.  Step 1: Find an Aerobed. Handy if you have company later. But great for sleeping outside for a night. Camping mats or hard foam mats can also work well.  Step 2: Inflate the bed. Mary and I just launched a site for Debra Austin, an author whose first book will be published in the fall by Simon and Schuster. The book is set 500,000 years ago, with a tribe of homo erectus, our early ancestors. How best to make readers connect with its central character Snap, when she is so distant from us? Working with the author, we thought the best way to go was to illustrate the site with scenes from Snap's life, working to show her humanity. Callaghan on last week’s Port Commission forum

The lack of substance could be blamed on incumbents who don’t want to talk about specifics and challengers who don’t have the ability or willingness to rock the boat. But it also could be due to a tedious and rule-bound format by the Tacoma City Club and its partners in the League of Women Voters. The format favors generalized responses as long as they don’t exceed the time limit. The City Club is one of the few organizations considered neutral ground that can command attendance by candidates.
